Warun Kumar

MANAGING PARTNER

Warun Kumar is the Founder and Managing Partner of Varick.

Prior to founding Varick, Warun was Head of Asset Management in the Americas for Barclays Capital, responsible for the development and distribution of asset management services for clients in the US, Canada and Latin America. Previously, Warun was head of Structured Investments Marketing and Product Development at Lehman Brothers, responsible for tailoring Structured Investments for portfolio advisors and market strategists in Lehman Brothers’ Private Investment Management and Neuberger Berman divisions, as well as Third Party Intermediaries. Prior to joining Lehman Brothers in 2007, Warun was founder and CEO of Sigma Advisors, LLC, an alternative investment advisory firm focused on asset allocation techniques for institutional and high-net-worth clients. He was also a partner at Volaris Advisors, responsible for managing the options advisory business and, prior to that, head of Equity Derivatives Marketing at Robertson Stephens. Warun began his career as a member of J.P. Morgan’s Equity Derivatives group.

Warun has 18 years of experience in the financial services industry, spanning investment management, capital markets and derivatives. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University.

Michael Davis

PARTNER

Michael Davis is a Partner at Varick and is responsible for product development and marketing strategy.

Prior to joining Varick, Michael had various roles at Barclays Capital and Lehman Brothers within the alternative asset management and derivatives businesses where he was responsible for product development and client relationship management. Prior to Lehman Brothers, Michael had been involved in the Asset Backed Securities  and Private Client areas of Merrill Lynch.

Michael has 13 years of experience in the investment management and capital markets industries. He holds a BS in Psychology from Georgetown University and an MBA from Cornell University.

Matthew Fleming

PARTNER

Matthew Fleming is a Partner at Varick and is  responsible for business operations, product development, and trading.

Prior to joining Varick, Matthew was a Director at Barclays Capital, responsible for the creation and marketing of structured investments and over-the-counter derivative transactions to high net worth investors, family offices and registered investment advisors. As part of his role there, he also managed the firm’s single stock hedging and monetization business. Prior to Barclays Capital, Matthew spent 10 years at Lehman Brothers as a member of the Structured Derivatives sales and origination team, which included building and managing the insurance derivatives sales team.

Matthew has 13 years of experience in the derivatives and structured products business. He holds a BA in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University and an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business.

Michael Garrett is a Partner at Varick and is responsible for business and product development.

Prior to joining Varick, Michael was a Senior Vice President at Neuberger Berman, responsible for strategic planning in the equities business, heading business development efforts with third parties, and launching the Investment Strategy Group. Prior to Neuberger Berman, Michael was a Vice President at Lehman Brothers and a founding member of the Portfolio Advisory team within the Private Investment Management Division, which provided asset allocation and manager selection advice for Private Investment Management clients.

Michael has 13 years of experience in the investment management industry. He holds a BA in Economics from The University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame.

Sunil Bhide

DIRECTOR

Sunil Bhide is a Director at Varick and a is responsible for trading and product development.

Sunil was formerly with Credit Suisse Volaris, where he played a senior role on the Volaris Portfolio Management and Trading team, managing portfolios in New York and Zurich. In this capacity, he was responsible for portfolio construction and risk management of Volaris’ overlay business. Sunil also was responsible for marketing Volaris’ strategies and products through third-party, Private Banking, and Asset Management distribution channels. He joined Volaris Advisors in 2002 prior to its acquisition by Credit Suisse in 2003. Previously, Sunil was an Analyst at JP Morgan where he assisted portfolio managers, and was part of a team that established a successful, inter-division, cross-marketing group.

Sunil has 14 years of experience in the investment management industry. He holds a BA in Economics from Binghamton University, is a CFA charterholder and is an active member of the CFA Institute and New York Society of Security Analysts.

David Hartunian

CONSULTANT

David Hartunian is a Vice President at Varick and is responsible for product development and trading.

Prior to joining Varick, David was an Analyst with the Fund Solutions group at Barclays Capital. His responsibilities included the research and development of algorithmic trading models across asset classes. At Varick, David is focused on the development and implementation of quantitative strategies and trading models, as well as technology solutions for the firm.

David holds a BS in Computational Finance from Carnegie Mellon University.

Alison Deans

SENIOR ADVISOR

Alison Deans is a Senior Advisor to Varick, providing expertise in the areas of business and product development as well as strategic partnerships.

Alison was the Chief Investment Officer for Neuberger Berman and Lehman Brothers Private Investment Management. In her role as CIO and the Head of Equities at Neuberger Berman, she oversaw a $1 billion revenue business with 400 people reporting to her. Previously, as part of the successful restructuring at BankOne, Alison was brought in by Jamie Dimon to be the Chief Financial Officer of the commercial bank. Prior to that, Alison was a securities analyst covering the financial services industry where she was consistently top ranked in both the Institutional Investor and Wall Street Journal polls, ranking number one her last two years as an analyst. Alison is a regular commentator on CNBC, speaking on the markets and the economy and was a regular commentator on Louis Rukeyser’s Wall Street for ten years.

Alison has over 25 years of experience in the investment management and capital markets industries. She holds a BSE in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Ron Insana

SENIOR ADVISOR

Ron Insana is a Senior Advisor to Varick, providing expertise in the areas of business and product development as well as strategic partnerships.

Ron brings nearly three decades of financial market experience as an award-winning journalist covering global economics, financial markets, political policy and the alternative investment industry.  He has previously served as a Managing Director at SAC Capital Advisors, a $14-billion hedge fund run by Steven A. Cohen. He was founder and CEO of Insana Capital Partners, a $120 million fund-of-funds business, from 2006-2008.

Ron also serves as a Contributor to CNBC, giving color to major market and political events. Previously, Ron was the anchor of CNBC’s Street Signs, wrote monthly columns for a major U.S. newspaper and hosted a nationally syndicated radio program. He joined CNBC in 1991 as a regular contributor to various television and radio programs produced by CNBC and its affiliates. Before moving to CNBC, Ron worked as Managing Editor and Senior Anchor for the Financial News Network, where he began his career in 1984 as a production assistant. He has written four books about Wall Street and was voted one of the “top 100 business journalists of the 20th century” by the TJFR Group. He graduated with honors from California State University at Northridge.

Anthony Tuths

Anthony Tuths is a consultant to Varick.

Prior to consulting with Varick, Tony was the global head of tax structuring at Deutsche Bank in New York. Tony has been a tax attorney focused on issues concerning asset managers and the alternative investment industry for more than 15 years. Tony has counseled many of the country’s largest funds regarding their use of capital markets transactions and cutting edge financial instruments. He is one of the country’s leading experts on tax issues arising from the new U.S. rules governing the derivatives markets. Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Tony gained experience in a variety of settings including global law firm practice, in-house practice and client tax structuring.
